Great tit

Great tit

Small – about the size of a sparrow – the great tit stands out with its distinctive coloring, where the yellow hue is the most prominent, accompanied by white, black, and gray. These small Polish birds are incredibly active – they move quickly, and their movement is characterized by agility. They are found throughout Europe, Asia, and also in the northern part of Africa. They prefer wooded and forested areas, but you'll also come across them in urban parks and residential areas abundant in greenery.

Lifestyle of the great tit - what it eats and where it lays eggs?

The diet of great tits consists of insects and spiders, fruits, and seeds. They build nests in tree hollows and nesting boxes provided by humans. They lay up to 12 eggs covered with characteristic red spots. The incubation period lasts about two weeks, and the chicks stay in the nest for a maximum of 20 days. They lead a sedentary lifestyle and, as wintering birds in Poland, they require human support, feeding, and the provision of nesting boxes for shelter. Many people choose to feed great tits during the winter by hanging out suet, which is valuable for the birds as it provides essential fat for survival. Remember to place the suet in a shaded area and only do so in sub-zero temperatures. Otherwise, the suet can go rancid and harm the great tits.

Great Tit - What's Worth Knowing? Learn a Few Facts!

For anyone who even slightly recognizes Polish birds, the great tit is familiar and easily distinguishable from other feathered inhabitants of our country. However, few people know that:

  • it is under strict protection in our country,
  • it forms monogamous pairs and breeds twice a year,
  • it has a wide range of calls - it can produce around 40 different sounds, and this diversity aims to create the impression that there are many more individuals in the area than there actually are - this is meant to deter potential predators,
  • as wintering birds in Poland, great tits form flocks with other species, which helps them survive adverse weather conditions,
  • the great tit is not very shy - some individuals are bold enough to eat food from the hands of pedestrians,
  • great tits have their dark side - it turns out that in the absence of food, they attack other birds and eat their brains!
