Common blackbird

Common blackbird

Occurring throughout the country and relatively easily recognizable, common blackbirds are partially migratory. Some individuals winter in Poland, especially those living in cities and near human settlements. Those that migrate do so around October and November, returning to us in March and April. Although originally forest birds, nowadays they appear in various environments – in urban parks, rural gardens, and on allotments.

Blackbird and Starling – what does a blackbird look like and how to distinguish it from a starling?

This is one of the most common mistakes made by inexperienced bird observers. Blackbirds are small black birds with orange beaks. Females are brown and have distinctive spots on their undersides. How does a starling differ from a blackbird? First of all, by their tails, which are quite long in blackbirds. Blackbirds are also slightly larger, while starlings have longer and sharper yellow beaks.

What does a blackbird eat and where does it nest?

A blackbird's diet consists of insects, worms, and soft fruits. Its nest takes the form of a deep cup made of grass and small twigs, lined with sand and grass on the inside. Inside the nest, blackbirds lay around 6 eggs, which are green with rusty spots. After two weeks of incubation, the chicks hatch and leave the nest about two weeks later.
